Kevin Kling’s first book, The Dog Says How, brought readers into his wonderful world of the skewed and significant mundane. His second book, Holiday Inn, is a romp through a year of holidays. “Kevin Kling’s stories are not merely delightful. They are surprising, wise and redemptive. He is one of our great national treasures.”

– Krista Tippett, public radio host and founder of Speaking of Faith.

  1. Hi: I am interested in using “21A” by Kevin kling as a text in my U of MN theatre course. Any information that you could provide would be useful. Thanks, Heather

  2. How do I get the rights to produce/direct The Ice Fishing Play at Buffalo High School, Buffalo, MN? Who has the rights? Please let me know via my above E-mail address or my home address of tracyhagstrom@charter.net. I would like to direct it in the fall of 2008. Thanks-Tracy

  3. Dear Kevin:

I haven’t heard you before on NPR, but I enjoyed “The Dog Says How”!! And how!!! Your simple but heartfelt style is wonderful.

Are your other books similar, with short memoir pieces? If so, are the books available? Which of your CDs are similar, and/or perhaps have other stories not included in “The Dog Says How.” (I haven’t studied your website–I apologize if that information is on it.)

How did you become involved in Storytelling (the organizations)? Did this grow out of your work as a playwright? I’ve had stories published based on family stories, but never thought of storytelling activities/organizations as a possible place to air the pieces. I’ve previously thought that people involved in Storytelling (with a capital “S”) had audiences of young children, or were carrying on the “oral tradition” such as tall tales, etc.

How do you remember all the little incidents that become the basis of your life stories? Making lists?
    Thinking of holidays? Random thoughts?

As for NPR, did you just start sending in your pieces until they grabbed them?

Finally, do you ever do readings or storytelling (for adults) out here in the Bay area?

Hope I have an opportunity to meet you one day.

    Sincerely,

    Trudi Gardner

  4. I have an upcoming audition for The Ice Fishing Play and would be able to practice my minnesotan accent better if I had some lines of each character.
