Storytelling showcase

Minnesota Public Radio presents Storycraft with Kevin Kling, an evening of master Twin Cities’ storytellers bringing innovation to live storytelling and giving new form to a story told. Storycraft is part of Kevin Kling’s original works residency with Minnesota Public Radio. Kling has been leading story telling workshops in Duluth and St. Paul with Minnesota’s best live storytellers. This showcase is the fruit of months of workshop labor. The best indentified storytellers in the region have gathered for this experiment in defining advances in the craft of storytelling. This specific community has become MPR content contributors with on-air and on-line commentaries and stories featured on All Things Considered.

Wednesday April 25th in the UBS Forum engage with stories, poems, music and films by Joseph Scrimshaw, Loren Niemi, Courtney Maclean, Allegra Lingo, Gary Dop and Barbara Wiener and other members of the Storycraft workshops. Our storytellers will be asking the question “what do we trust”, along with original stories performed by Kevin Kling.

Tickets for this literary evening will be limited to 130 and will be on sale 4/10 at the MPR Box Office for $15, and discounted to $12 for MPR Members. The Box Office is open Tuesday-Friday 12pm-5pm and tickets may be purchased over the phone 651-290-1200.

Kevin Kling is a well-known playwright and storyteller, and his commentaries can be heard on NPR’s All Things Considered. His plays and adaptations have been performed around the world. Kling’s original works residency with MPR will continue with a Thanksgiving weekend show at The Fitzgerald Theater this Thanksgiving weekend. He lives in Minneapolis.
.
The UBS Forum is located at the Minnesota Public Radio Headquarters

“The New Work of Dogs, author Jon Katz insists that animals work as much in contemporary urban culture as they’ve ever done in any period in human history. But it’s a different kind of work; it’s the difficult work of loving us. We have become the sheep that drift towards the unmapped darkness at the edge; animals bring us back to the meadow.”

The performances in this series map the shifting boundaries between the animal and human, always reminding us of the animal in the human.

“Jungian analyst James Hillman writes about the Durer etching of Dame Melancholy with her dog at her feet, Robert Bly said we as a nation developed a neurosis when we stopped working with large animals. Martin Luther said he wished he could pray “like my dog looks at meat.” Medieval bestiaries prescribed sleeping next to a dog to cure internal illness. When I get down or depressed, I just look at our wiener dogs because you’ll never see a more can do attitude in a more can’t do body than a wiener dog.”

Free First Saturday

Join in an exciting day of art-making, films, performances, and tours that plays with the memories of young and old. Gallery admission is free for everyone on the first Saturday of each month from 10 am to 5 pm, with a variety of family activities scheduled from 10 am to 3 pm.

In this fun story-telling event, celebrated playwright and performer Kevin Kling narrates his recent children’s book Big Little Brother, co-authored and illustrated by painter and cartoonist Chris Monroe. This charming story traces a familiar arc from sibling rivalry to brotherly love.

Being an older brother has its benefits, of that there’s little doubt. But how would you feel if your little brother grew to be bigger than you? And what if he insisted on touching all your things and following you everywhere you went? It’s enough to frustrate the most even-keeled of kids. Then an encounter at the playground teaches him that a pesky younger sibling can actually be a pal.

ABOUT:
Founded in the spring of 1996, House of Mercy offers a discriminating blend of high church and low, of tradition and innovation, sincere worship and healthy skepticism.

Although the roots of the House of Mercy are in the free church tradition–we began as an American Baptist Church–we are committed to the diverse and rich theology and worship of the Christian church worldwide and historical. While we draw different elements of worship from many Christian ritual traditions–Lutheran (we are affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America), Catholic, Anglican, Orthodox, and the free churches–at House of Mercy we seek to create a place where questions are encouraged, where you will not be handed a checklist of orthodoxy, where ambiguity is not the enemy of faith but its partner. You may occasionally be led to suspend your intellect. But you will not be required to sacrifice it.

There are so many wonderful things happening at the 27th Annual Texas Storytelling Festival, that you can’t bear to miss it! If you love Donald Davis, you’ll love Kevin Kling. His stories will make you laugh while wiping the tears from your eyes. MaryAnn Blue shares stories of her “wide screen” childhood, and will unravel for us how to present Bilingual Storytelling for the Non-Spanish Speaker. Patrick Ball will bring the enchantment of old Celtic tales, accompanied by the Irish harp. His bardic telling of the legend of Tristan and Isolde will be breath taking. Kim Lehman will bring her whimsical and life affirming look at our world. It’s gonna be pure magic.

There will be a dozen helpful workshops– something great for every level of ability and interest. Kevin will also present a writing Master Class on Storytelling and Healing. Of course there will be Ghost Stories to raise the hairs on the back of your neck and Sacred Tales to inspire and uplift you in these difficult days. We have even convinced Jay Stailey to lead a Labyrinth Walk again this year. This form of walking meditation is not tied to any specific religious group and invites us to contemplate our own life’s journey.
