Festival History
A mother and her nine year old daughter heard about the National Storytelling Festival in 1987. Even though they had little idea what type of event it was, they decided to go. They were so excited about their experience at the festival, when they returned to Morehead, KY they told others about it. The next year a few more went from Morehead and the next year even more went. In a few years 50-70 people were going each year. As they talked about the festival among themselves, they would say, “Wouldn’t it be neat if we could have a storytelling festival in Morehead? But where would we have it? How could we do it?”
One Saturday morning one of the regular festival attendees, Ed, was jogging with Dave, the district ranger of the Daniel Boone National Forest, who had never been to a storytelling festival. Ed was telling Dave about the questions that had been raised by the regular festival attendees. Dave told Ed that he had been looking for a unique festival or event to have on the shores of the lake. Dave called Carolyn Franzini (the mother of the nine year old daughter) and the idea to have a festival on the shores of beautiful Cave Run Lake was hatched.
